Rémi Portal

Self-taught, since 2018 he has felt his passion for wood sculpture mature. With a contemporary and abstract style, his large-scale works, whether wall-mounted or freestanding, contribute to projects for luxurious residences.

His sculptures are shaped with the aim of preserving the sensual elegance offered by the structure of various types of wood, whether pine, exotic, or noble.

His inspiration arises from his sensitivity driven by the need to create in a different manner, to challenge all conformity.

For the overall form of the works, he sketches drawings based on his imagination teeming with pre-existing observations.

To sculpt, he employs a variety of sometimes unique technical solutions, including scarification, trimming, sandblasting, carbonization, superficial sawing, and grinding.

For textures, he draws partly from nature, as he likes to say, "everything is in nature!"

For colors, he favors the natural dispositions of wood, but he often finds an affinity with black, especially using India ink. He sees black in a positive light, invoking elegant artistic virtues rather than the mythological or religious connotations of sadness.

In conclusion, his artistic approach consists of a desire to embellish while stimulating inspiration.
